How to Perform Hajj and Umrah

In the Name of Allah,
the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

1. A Muslim who intends to perform Hajj, this great fard (obligatory),
will start by first fulfilling all the Wajibaat, If he has a debt he will
fulfill the debt or he will ask the creditor permission or if he had
harmed a Muslim he will free himself (ask forgiveness) from that.

2. He will choose good friends for Hajj. No doubt it should be
Fukahaa of Deen, because that is necessary to fulfill the Hajj in
a most complete manner (مَبرُور Mabroor).

3. A person should learn all the rules pertaining to Hajj before
his safar (journey). Imaan Ghazzali (R.A.A) counts this Ilm
as فَرْضُ عَين  fard Ain on everyone who intends to
perform Hajj.

4. When a person begins Hajj its permissible for him to wear
Ihraam from his home or to delay it till hisمِيقَات Miqaath
 (boundary).

5. When he intends putting on Ihraam from his home or Miqaath
he should have a bath first then he should put on his Ihraam cloths
that is the Izaar and Ridah (the top and the bottom sheets which are
not sewn), then he performs two rakaths of Sunnah for Ihraam then
he faces the qiblah and says the Niyyath, it should be made by heart
(fard) and preferably by uttering (with the tongue) if the niyyah is for
Hajj its for Hajj and if it is for Umrah its for Umrah. When he does
this he will become a Muhrim - a person in the state of Ihraam and
everything will become haraam on him ( as per the rulings of Hajj)

6. If he does anything now which is haraam, Fidyah (expiation) is fard
on him however intercourse will break a person's Hajj, it will make
fidyah waajib.

7. When his Journey is by plane its better for him to be in the state of
Ihraam as the plane takes off, fearing that the plane might pass the
miqaath while he doesn't know and this will make dam Waajib.

8. As he is in Ihraam it is recommended for him to say :
اللّهُمّ لَكَ أُحْرِمُ نَفسِى وَشَعْرِى وَلَحْمِى وَدَمِى
and it is Sunnah to say Talbiya specially when he climbs a high position,
comes down a valley or meet a group of friends and Talbiya is :
لَبّيكَ اللّهُمّ لَبّيكَ  لَبّيكَ لا شَرِيكَ لَكَ  لَبّيكَ
اِنَّ الحَمْدَ والنَّعْمَةَ لَكَ والمُلْكَ لا شَريكَ لَكَ
''Ever at Your service, O Allah, ever at Your service. Ever at Your
service, You have no partner, ever at Your service. Verily, all praise,
blessings and dominion are Yours. You have no partner''

9. And a woman is similar to a man ( in all the rulings) besides that it
is not Waajib on her to remove the sewn garments and she should
not raise her voice with Talbiya and at this point (before Ihraam) it
will be Waajib on her to open her face and hands. A woman should
wear a cap with a hood in front and hang a cloth from it. (if she wishes
to continue covering her face).

10. When the Muhrim enters مَكّة Makkah it is Sunnah for him to have
a Bath to enter Makkah and best is to have a bath at the well called
Dhi Thuwa (ذِى طُوى)

11. Immediately as he enters Makkah he should face
Baithul Haraam intending طواف القُدُوم Tawaaful Qudoom
(welcome Tawaaf) if he intends Hajj and if he intends Umrah then
he intendsطواف العُمْرَة Tawaaful Umrah and when he sees
the Ka'abah  he raises his hands while saying Takbir and makes this Dua :

''O Allah, increase this house in nobility, honor, reverence, and dignity.
Increase those going on hajj or Umrah who honor and reverence it in
honor, reverence, and  piety. O Allah, You are Peace, the Source of
peace; O Lord, raise us after death in peace.''

And he makes whatever Dua'a he wishes. It is Sunnah to enter by the door
of Bani Shaybah (بنى شيبى) because Nabi صلى الله عليه وسلم entered from
that door.

12. Then he will go towards the Ka'bah and start his Tawaaf at حَخر الاسْوَد
Hajarul  Aswad (the black stone), and he will makeأستِلام Istilaam (point
and kiss the hand) with his hand or he will kiss it, if he managers that as this
is a Sunnah, after kissing it, it is Waajib on him to raise his head and move a
little backward until he comes out the boundries of the Ka'bah. If he is
not capable of all this, then he will  just point at Hajarul Aswad from far.

13. Now he will carry on with his Tawaaf putting the Ka'bah on to his left
and whenever he reaches Hajarul Aswad he has completed one round, like
this he will complete seven (7) because Tawaaf consists of 7 rounds.

14. It is Waajib in Tawaaf to cover the Awrah, to be clean from Hadas(minor
impurity) and Najasath (impurity) if Hadas occurs while making Tawaaf he will
make Wudhu and he will make Bana بنا ( he will build on it, continue) from it
and it is Waajib to make Tawaaf outside the Ka'bah, if he enters from one of
the two openings of حِجر Hijar (حَتِيم Hathim - the short wall ) and comes out
from the other opening this round will not be countered because this Hijar is
part of the Ka'bah.

15. It is Sunnah in Tawaaf  to say in the begining
''In the Name of Allah and Allah is the Greatest.  O Allah, out of
faith in You and to affirm Your book, fulfill Your covenant, and follow
the Sunnah of Your prophet Muhammad (Allah bless him and give
him peace).''

And when he is in line with the door,
he should say by the two Al Rukainul Yamaani
''Our Lord, give us what is good in this world and the next, and keep
us from the torment of hell.''

16. It is Sunnah to make Ramal رَمل in the first three rounds if there is a
Sa'i سعى after this Tawaaf, and Ramal means to walk fast while taking
close footsteps and last four (4) rounds he walks normal and in Ramal
a person will recite :
اللّهُمَّ اجْعَلهُ حَجًا مَبرُورًا وَسَعْيًا مَشْكُورًا وَذَنْبًا مَغْفُورًا
''O Allah, make this a pious hajj, a rewarded effort, and forgive my sins.''

17. It is Sunnah to make Idtibah إضْطِبَاع if there is Sa'i after Tawaaf.
means to put the top part of the Ihraam over the left shoulder going under
the right arm, so that the right arm and shoulder are bare.

18. Ramal and Idthibah are only for men.

19. It is Sunnah in Tawaaf to be close to the Ka'bah (eg : just to be 3 foot
steps away from it) but if it is going to harm him then far from the Ka'bah
is better. It is recommended for a woman to make Tawaaf by the edge of
(before the Masjid) Mathaaf (if there is a crowd).

20. It is recommended to make Isthilaam of Al Ruknul Yamaani ( if that is
possible) otherwise he will point at it from a distance. No Sunnah is
mentioned regarding the kissing of Al Rukunal Yamaani, but if a person
kissed it is not Makrooh.

21. The Ka'bah has four (4) corners, a corner is called a Rukan رُكن. In one
corner you will find the Hajarul Aswad, while making Tawaaf the closest to
it is Rukanul Iraqi الرُكن العِراقى then Rukanas Samanin الرُكن الثمانين and
Rukanul Yamani

22. When he finishes his Tawaaf he performs Salah behind theالمقام إبراهيم
Maqam-e-Ibrahim, two Rakath Sunnah of Tawaaf, in the First Rakath Surathul
Kafiroon and in the second Rakath Surathul Ikhlaas.

23. After completing the two Rakath he will kiss the Hajarul Aswad or
he will do Isthilaam.

24. Then you come out of Babus Safa باب الصفاء for Sa'i and you climb Mount
Safa and start Sa'i. When he climbs the Safa he will say :

''There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. His is the dominion, His is the
praise, He gives life and causes to die, all good is in His hand, and He has power
over everything. There is no god but Allah alone, without partner. He kept His
promise, gave His slave the victory, and routed the Confederates alone. There
is no god but Allah. We worship none but Him, making our religion sincerely for
Him, though unbelievers be averse''

After that he will make any Dua'a he wishes by Babus Safa.

25. After that  he will walk till he reaches the green lights and he will make
Ramal until he reaches the second green light, then he will walk towards the
Marwah normal. This is considered as one (1) round.

26. Then he will walk from Marwah to Safa this is the second one and the
Fard is, that he completes Seven (7) rounds. Ramal is Sunnah for men in Sa'i
but not for a woman.

27. It is recommended for the person performing Sa'i to say during his Sa'i :

O Allah! O Controller of hearts, let my heart hold fast to Your religion.
O Allah! I beg of You all causes of the grant of Your mercy and forgiveness;
I seek complete safety from committing sins and salvation by attaining Jannah
and deliverance from the Fire. O Allah! I beg of You piety, modesty and
freedom from being needy towards others.

28. As we know already it is Waajib to start from Safa and stop in Marwah.

29. He should keep in mind that a person cannot begin Sa'i unless there is a
Tawaaf of Qudoom or Umrah.

30. If a person has finished Sa'i and his Ihraam was for Umrah now he can
shave or trim his hair. Now his Umrah is complete.

  3. Hi. I wanted to drop you a quick note to express my thanks. I've been following your blog for a month or so and have picked up a ton of good information as well as enjoyed the way you've structured your site. I am attempting to run my own blog but I think its too general and I want to focus more on smaller topics. Being all things to all people is not all that its cracked up to be.
