بسم الله الرحمان الرحيم
In the Name of Allah,
the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The Defective Love
The person who does not give up sin has not yet perfected his love.
If one commits sin and does not become troubled thereby, one is still
totally flawed, totally defective in love. A poet, Faani Badyaanwi who
loved his wife says :
We have, O Faani, seen the pulse of the universe to be waning
When the disposition of the beloved we saw disordered.
The Buzrugs (saints) have written that when in worldly love one loses
sight of the entire world, what will the condition of Allah's lovers be
when Allah is displeased? Who can ever draw an appropriate analogy?
Seriousness of Sin
On a minor error committed, Allah Messengerصلى الله عليه وسلم did not
speak to the perpetrators for a period of fifty days. The entire existence
of these Sahabah was converted into a state of perpetual darkness. Allah
Ta'ala revealed their condition of heart in the Quraan-e- Majeed. Had they
expressed their inner state, history would have recorded it as self praise but
it was Allah Ta'ala who praised them and till the day of judgement set a seal
on the truth of their love. ''A single moment of disobedience to Me has them
so restless, to the extent that :
ضَاقَتْ عَلَيهِمُا الآرضُ بِمَارَحُبَت
''The earth in spite of its spaciousness seemed narrow to them.''
وَضَاقَت عَلَيهُم اَنفُسُهُم
''Their lives became narrow upon themselves.''
They feel bitterness in their lives. From this we realise that one who does not
experience that degree of remorse and regret, that level of restlessness after
committing sin, has not yet tasted the sweetness of love. Otherwise, one who
has a correct connection with Allah Ta'ala will be upset at even an act which
is Makrooh, which is disliked. If the needle of a compass has to move even
slightly away from true north, it will sway violently from side to side until it
settles back onto true north,
Definition and Signs of Sakinah - Tranquility
Therefore, the definition of Sakinah, of tranquility is :
هِى نُورٌ يَستَقِرُّ فِى القَلبِ وَبِهِ يَثبُتُ التَّوَجُّهُ اِلَى الحَقِّ
''Sakinah is a light which settles upon the heart, by which it, thereafter,
always remains attentive towards Allah.''
The sign of Sakinah having entered the heart is that one can not thereafter be
unmindful of Allah Ta'ala whether one is in the marketplaces of the world or
in the masjid, whether one is with one's wife and children or with one's friends
and associates. As in the case of the compass's needle the tip of which has
been polished with magnetism and is constantly in search for an attractive
magnetic force. One whose heart is polished with the magnetism of Noor, of
effulgence and light, will always remain correctly inclined towards the source
of that Noor, towards Allah Ta'ala.
If perchance it shifts away, it will become hopelessly restless until the direction
towards Allah Ta'ala is not re-established. If he happens to commit such an act
which he comes to know is a source of Allah's displeasure, he will fall prostrate
with his head on the ground, shedding profuse tears until the place of prostration
becomes wet with his tears of regret which he will combine with the blood of
heartfelt remorse in supplicating Allah Ta'ala for forgiveness and thereby pleasing
Allah. Not until he has done this, does any worldly bounty appeal to and please
him. Such a person becomes constrained and bound by love. If at all, he wants to
forget Allah Ta'ala, he will be unable to do so. This state has been referred to by
Khwaajah Sahab in the following words.
''In spite of forgetting Him, I am forced to remember.''
