USING A TOOTHSTICK- MISWAK (SIWAK)

Miswak is a small stick used for the cleansing and polishing the teeth.

In the Sacred Law it refers to the use of a twig or the like on the teeth
and around them to remove an unpleasant change in the breath or
similar, together with the intention ( of performing the sunnah )

Using a miswak is recommended anytime, except after zawal for
someone who is fasting, in which case it is makrooh(offensive)

Note: Zawal- after the sun moves to the peak of it's heigth.

Rasoolullah (S.A.W) has said the change of smell of the mouth of a
fasting person is more fragrant by Allah Ta'ala then the fragrance of musk.
(Bukhari)

Note: Even if it is an optional fast, it is still makrooh to make
miswak after zawal for a fasting person, but after sunset it will
not remain makrooh because the person is not fasting anymore.

Using toothpaste is also makrooh then, and if any reaches the
stomach of someone fasting, it is haraam (unlawful)if the fasting
is fard (obligatory),as this breaks a fast.

It is especially desirable to use the miawak for every prayer, for
reading (the Qur'an,hadith,or a lesson),wudu(ablution),yellowness
of teeth, waking from sleep, entering one's house, and for any change of
breath from eating something with a bad odor or from not eating.

When there exists a demand for an act, such as using the miswak
before reading the Qur'an, and equal demand not to, as when it is after
zawal on a fast-day, then the proper course is not to do it.

Anything coarse is adequate (to fulfil the sunnah) except rough fingers
(and toothbrush),though the best is a twig from the Arak (a desert
shrub)that is dried (meaning previously cut from the shrub long
enough to have dried)and then moistened.

Rasoolullah (S.A.W) said: the miswak is a cleanser of the mouth and
a means of attaining Allah Ta'ala's pleasure.
(Bukhari)

It is reported from Huzaifah (R.A) that Ayesha(R.A)had said: that when
Rasoolullah (S.A.W) wakes from sleep at night he used to make miswak.
(Bukhari)

It is reported from Abu Hurairah (R.A) that Rasoolullah (S.A.W) said :
If I would not have made it difficult for my ummah then indeed, I
would have commanded them to make miswak for every salah.
(Bukhari)

Rasoolullah (S.A.W) said : Two rakah of salah performed after making
miswak is more virtuous or has more virtue than 70 rakah performed
without miswak.

(It is narrated by Humaidi)

The miswak shouldn't be longer than a hand span and shouldn't be
thicker than your finger.

To make miswak during wudu is one sunnah, and to make miswak for
salah is another sunnah. Miswak in wudu should be made after
washing the palms but before gurgling.

Method of making miswak - is to use the right hand to hold on,
beginning from the right side of the mouth then brush each tooth,
horizontally (inner and outer side of the teeth) and tongue
vertically.

Method of holding the miswak - is that besides the thumb and the
little finger. The remaining 3 fingers should be on the upper part
of the miswak.

ULAMAHS' HAVE MENTIONED THESE BENIFITS OF MISWAK

1 Allah Ta'ala is pleased with the user of miswak.
2 Cleansers the mouth and whitens the teeth.
3 Strengthens the gums.
4 A person remembers the kalimah shahadah at the time of  death.

Note: It is preferable to make a person use the miswak when he or she
is in the pangs of death  (sakarath). This causes the soul (ruh) to come
out easily . It is said that the miswak is a cure to all sickness beside death.
